Breaking Down 4 Different Types of Roofing Material
When it comes to your roof, there’s a lot to consider. After all, your roof tops off your house, so you should be thoroughly sure of the material you entrust to help protect your home. While there are certainly more than 4 types of roofing material, we feel as though the ones we’ve chosen are the most popular options amongst homeowners. Remember, like most everything, each roofing material has its pros and cons. Let’s check them out and help you make a more informed decision!
1.) Asphalt Shingles
If you were to drive around any typical suburban neighborhood, you’d likely see that almost every house has asphalt shingles. They are the most common residential roofing material in the United States, mostly because they are both economical and easy to install. They can also be reinforced with fiberglass for increased protection, in addition to the fact they come in a variety of styles. On the downside, they have a shorter lifespan than other materials. Asphalt shingles also don’t provide insulation, and can range quite a quality spectrum.
2.) Metal Roof
Choosing a metal roof means opting for a roof that is resistant to extreme weather conditions. The materials you have to choose from are aluminum, copper, zinc, and stainless steel. You can choose to have those materials come in panels or shingles. Not only are they long lasting, but they are also sleek, lightweight, and recyclable! There’s not much bad to say about metals roofs, aside from the fact they can be pricey. But, they are quite durable and last longer than both asphalt and wood.
3.) Slate Roof
Slate roofs have a distinct appearance , and shingle colors can include green, black, red, purple, and grey. Like a metal roof, slate can also be recycled, and is also both durable and fire resistant. While it can be a striking feature of your home, it is expensive. It requires professional installation and extra framing due to its heavy weight. If the slate has been imported, it’s quality can vary.
4.) Rubber Roof
Synthetic roofing products, like rubber, are designed to look like natural materials like wood or slate. They can even mimic the color and texture to appear more like the real thing. The advantage to this, though, is that synthetic products are much easier to maintain. Not to mention they are also considerably stronger. Choosing rubber is not as expensive other products, but, like the other options, the quality varies among some of the new products.
Each of those four materials offers their own distinct qualities to your home. Some are more practical, while others look amazing but require a bit of upkeep. The options you’re likely to look at as a homeowner will be mostly comprised of these materials. Is there one you find yourself gravitating towards more than the others?
